We have known since Jack was very young that he was going to need some corrective surgery in the urology department. Nothing major, but it certainly needs to get corrected before he starts school. Unfortunately, we have already learned that Bo will also need the very same surgery. Bo's surgery will happen sooner though because his condition is worse. In either case, it's really not that big of a deal, other than it's surgery on a penis. According to The Coach, any surgery on a penis is major.
Without putting all the gory details out there, this is the conversation I overheard between Jack and Justice.
Jack: "My surgery is in a few days. I don't think I need it. My penis is just fine."
Justice: "You have to have it done, buddy. You can't pee sideways forever."
Jack: "But I LIKE to pee sideways. It's a fun trick."
Justice: "But sometimes you pee on me accidentally. Once you get your penis fixed you can pee straight in the toilet."
Jack: "That's no accident. I like to pee on you."
And there you have it.
With school looming right around the corner, we couldn't put it off any longer. We scheduled the surgery at LeBonheur Children's Hospital. I was really impressed with the entire process. They are indeed a well-oiled machine. The nurses and everyone else there was very kind and put Jack at ease at the start.
Well, that's not really true. Jack was at ease on his own. He wasn't worried in the slightest. He was cool as a cucumber when we got to the hospital to check in.
We waited for awhile in the waiting room to get checked in. He was fine. No stress.
Checked in and enjoying the breezy gown. Still OK.
Playing with the car they let him pick out. He was pretty impressed with the free gift section.
They explained everything to him and then got ready to take him back. The doctor said:
"Your Mom can come in the operating room with you if you'd like."
Jack: "No thanks. I'm good."
Well huh. I had a flashback to when Justice had to have his stomach scoped when he was Jack's age. It was hell from the second we got out of the car until we got home. His anxiety was horrible, and he cried and screamed, they had to tie him down, all of that nonsense.
And here's Jack, "No thanks. I'm good." Yay for Jack.
They sent me to the waiting room where they had this neat board like a flight status board at the airport. They gave me a four digit code to track his progress. 6876 was Jack.
The surgery took about an hour or so, then I went back to the recovery room to wait for him to wake up. He was so peaceful looking while he was asleep. The OR nurse said he was awesome, they didn't have any problems with him at all.
As the anesthesia wore off, he calmed down. The nurses tell me it's normal to react like that to anesthesia. I almost didn't believe them and thought they were just telling me that to make me feel better, but another kid did the same thing while I was there so I guess it was OK. I don't know what I was expecting, I think I figured since he was such a good pre-op patient he'd be a good post-op patient. Apparently having your penis sliced open and sewn back together changes the game.
I can see how that would change things.
They kept us around for an hour or so and then we came home. Poor little guy threw up all the way home, and is still throwing up. Hopefully he will feel better soon.
I'm really thankful this long awaited surgery is over and no longer hanging over his or our heads. I'm thankful it went well and the doctor said it will heal perfectly and nobody will ever be able to tell. So here is to 100% success.

Just relaxing, enjoying the fact that Disney Jr was on the TV while tucked under a warm blanket that the nurses kept refreshing for him.

And then he woke up and all hell broke loose.
I'm not exaggerating when I say all hell broke loose. He woke up an angry and violent mess. As he got closer to consciousness, I noticed his brows started to become furrowed. His face started to get red, and he started to twitch. And then he regained complete consciousness and turned into a WWE wrestler on steroids. He tried getting out of bed, he was thrashing around, pulling out wires and tubes, it was awful.
They finally got him calmed down a little bit with an Icee. Yeah, the children's hospital recovery room has an Icee machine and that's what you get when you wake up. How's that for awesome? And once you finish that, you can have a popsicle.
