I'm taking the Christmas decorations down today, and I came upon the gingerbread house that Jack made in school. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays and all the family we had in town, I don't think I took a long enough look at his creation to fully appreciate it.
I've seen plenty of gingerbread houses in my day. And most of them looked like a tornado had struck the poor house. Roofs collapsed, frosting globs every which way, and random candy placed haphazardly all over the place if it even made it on the house rather than the mouth. And there was that one year that Justice thought it would be ok to just eat it on the bus on the way home from school. And the year that he stuffed it in his backpack. And the year that Shandi ate all her candy, said what the heck and ate the graham crackers before she could even build the house. And the year that… yeah, never mind.
Tragic, really.
And then Jack brought home his little house, and it's really cute! And he actually decorated it all by himself, and he was pretty proud of his work. Me too! It has a little lined sidewalk and appropriately placed candy. The tree is in the right place in the yard and everything, and it even stands up. I actually left it out on display rather than slipping it into the trash unnoticed.
Great job Jack Mack! I love it!

That is a great house. You know me! I love noticing the growth in a child through their arts and craft projects. It's just a really special thing.
