Shandi's Accident

Shandi was a passenger in a horrific car accident yesterday.  She and her co-workers were carpooling home from work when a drunk driver crossed over into their lane on Highway 59 near Drummonds and collided with their vehicle.  The vehicle flipped numerous times before eventually landing in a deep ravine off the road.  She was in the front passenger seat.

This is what the truck looked like after they pulled it from the ravine.

One of her co-workers was able to call me from the ambulance and let me know they were on their way to the hospital, and although Shandi was unconscious at the scene of the accident, that she was alert at the time and looked like she was OK.  I could hear her crying and hollering at whoever was working on her to stop sticking her with a needle (they were having trouble getting the line started), and it immediately relieved me to know that she was alert and talking.  Two of her co-workers were taken to the Med for head trauma and other critical injuries, another had a broken wrist.  Six hours later, they released her from the hospital with several cuts on her head, abrasions with imbedded glass all over her arms and face, a bruised hip and ribs, and trauma to her bladder.  But, she is all right.  Very very sore today, but she is here and in one piece and is up and walking around.  The doctor told her she can go back to work on Monday.

Thank God for seat belts, and thank God she was riding in a big truck rather than her little car.  I know the outcome would have been far different if it were her turn to drive the carpool in her small car.

I was happy to have the opportunity to watch the sheriff arrest the drunk driver and take him to jail, complaining the entire time about how the accident was not his fault and that he hadn't been drinking.  He was clearly drunk, even six hours after the accident occurred.

Shandi doesn't remember much about the accident, she says she blacked out very quickly and that's probably for the best.  She said the first thing she remembers is the driver of her vehicle kicking out the windshield so they could get out, and someone pulling her out of the truck.

I have prayed more times last night and today than I can count.  We are counting our blessings today, and I'm so grateful that she and the other passengers in the truck are all all right.
