Jack School Update

Jack is doing very well in school.  Unfortunately, he still absolutely hates it.  He counts down the days until summer, a holiday, or even Friday.  When Monday morning rolls around, he cries about having to go to school.  I don't know what he hates the most, I can't really put my finger on it and he will only tell you that he hates

"ALL OF IT".

It's very frustrating, but as long as he continues to excel at it, I'm going to ignore him.

This pretty much sums up how Jack feels about it.

Latest report card was all A's.  Actually, he's only ever gotten A's.  And in spite of him hating school, and him crying all the time, his teachers love him and he's never gotten in any type of trouble.

Jack is a great reader.  These are his latest STAR test scores.  He is 9 and in the third grade.  He is reading at a 7th (almost 8th) grade level, and scored a 99 on his test.  He's a smart kid.  I wish he enjoyed school more.

This was the day he earned the privilege of reading "red dot" books at the school library.  The books are categorized by learning level, and the colored dot on the spine of the book represents the highest reading level book the student is allowed to check out.  The red dot represents the highest reading level available in the school library.

In the spring of 2nd grade, the school had a reading contest to see who could read the most books AND pass the online Accelerated Reader test for each book or it wouldn't count.  The prize was a brand new Kindle Fire.  Jack was bound and determined to win that prize.  I tried very hard to keep him grounded about the slim chances of a 2nd grader reading the most books, but he refused to hear it.

I spent so much money at the bookstore it was shameful.  But seriously, who can say no to books?

Not I!

Plenty of nights he fell asleep with a pile of books next to him.

This kid read 86 books in six weeks.

86 books.
Chapter books, no less.  And passed all 86 AR tests.

This picture was taken the morning of the book deadline.  Eyes swollen, exhausted, and up all night reading.

AND... The winner is...

Jack!
Jack read the most books out of the entire elementary school, by a large margin.  He won the Kindle Fire and even got his picture in the paper.

Congrats,  Jack!  One of the things we say often in our home is

"Hard work always pays off"

Jack worked hard and it certainly did pay off.
