Camping Trip 2017-1, T.O. Fuller

This trip has become a tradition for us over spring break.  Each year we think that we might do something else instead, but then everybody gets a little nostalgic, so we go anyway.  I would actually be sad if we didn't go, we have made a lot of memories here, it's the only place we have ever gone camping in the early spring.

Hey look, another crazy-face kid.  We can really breed them crazy, can't we?

Crazy-Face number 2.  Except he's not a happy-crazy like the other two.  He's a grumpy crazy.

And, the original crazy-face.

This is my favorite part of camping in the early spring.  It's cool enough to really enjoy a campfire.  It gets SO hot here in the summer that the very last thing you want to do is spark up a big fire.

Although we usually still light a fire in the summer, because who doesn't love a toasted marshmallow?

Bo is a little bit older now, so we took a huge chance and took him on a hike.  Not just any hike, but a four mile hike.

Go big or go home, right?

The dotted line is the hiking trail.

We took this picture as we left.  See everybody smiling?  That lasted about ten minutes.

Actually, it was fine.  And very pretty.

It got sort of hairy in a couple of places.  The trail wasn't very well traveled, so it was hard to figure out where we were going in some places.  Obviously we went the right way since we are still alive to tell the tale.

There were bridges that made me nervous.  I like to camp, I even like to tent camp.  But I do not like snakes, and I don't like heights.  Camping on a not very well traveled trail means snakes, and bridges mean heights.  And Bo running around like the Tasmanian Devil was just about enough for me.

There were some spots we sent Justice up ahead as bait.  I mean, he's the Eagle Scout, right?  Seems fair to me.  Haha.

There were a lot of hills.

You can tell I'm investigating the bridge like there is an ugly old troll living underneath it.

We finished in a decent time, nobody needed to stop, and nobody needed to be carried.  Bo was a complete trooper, he didn't start to slow down until the last 1/4 mile or so, but he still moved at a decent pace for such teeny legs.

He was very proud of himself when we were done.

I tease Jus about being an Eagle Scout, and he looks plenty ridiculous with those soccer socks on.  But in reality, he's the only smart one.  No poison ivy or ankle bug bites for him.

Every time we leave for a camping trip I let the kids hit the $5 movie bin at Walmart and let them each pick out a movie.  We watch movies at night before bed, although everybody is usually so tired they are asleep within the first ten minutes.  Wait, no.  That's honestly just Justice.  Jack and Bo usually make it through a movie.

The boys and The Coach play a lot of games when we camp.  Board games, card games, sports games, anything.

I refuse to play.  They are competitive, they cheat, and they are all sore losers.  Somebody either ends up crying, stomping off, or two of the three boys end up tackling each other.  Heck, sometimes it's all three of them.  And oh gosh, now that Bo thinks he's old enough to play, it's even worse.  He makes up rules as he goes and takes other peoples turns if they aren't paying attention.

There is a little zip-line at the park on the playground.  It's too high for Bo to reach.  Please look at this picture closely.  Bo took the camp stool and a piece of rope over to the zip line.  He tossed the rope over the handle so he could pull the handle closer to him.  He's on his tip-toes trying his hardest to reach that handle.

This is the stuff trips to the emergency room are made of.

It was a good trip, we are happy for the memories and the time spent together with no distractions.  The Coach works long hours, it was good to get away.
