Bye Bye Bottle

I set out to wean Bo off of the bottle this week.  He drinks way too much formula and eats like a little bird.  He eats three meals a day, but REALLY small ones.  He eats one cookie and he's stuffed.  He eats three bites of food, tops.  He likes everything, he just doesn't eat much.  But what he really enjoys is his bottle.  I decided to keep track of how much formula he was drinking and he topped the scale on Sunday at 56 ounces.  Yeahhhhhh, that's too much.  WAY too much.  Typically I wean my babies from the bottle at 12 months and he is only nine months, so it is indeed a little early.  But, something had to give so he would stop drinking so many of his calories.

And in my style of go big or go home, I just woke up Monday and decided he wasn't getting another bottle.  Ever again.  And that was pretty much it.  I mean really, why drag things out?

Joe:  "Don't you think you are being a little premature?  Maybe he will go back to it."
Me:  "Nope.  Not gonna happen.  I'm not letting him go back."
Joe:  "You're mean, Mama!"

And so that was it.  And lucky for me, it wasn't horrible.  He was quick to physically throw the first cup back at me when I gave it to him, but once he realized that was all he was getting he drank from it like a champ.

And good news, he only drank 18 ounces of formula yesterday, and ate three good meals.  Today he has only had 10 ounces of formula so far, and two big meals and a snack.

Now don't get me wrong, we've had a couple of fights.  When he's ready for his catnap or bed, he's ready for a bottle.  He's not happy that he's got to drink sitting up and out of a cup.  We had a nice fight in the middle of the night last night.  He cried to have a bottle, and I sat him up and gave him a drink out of his cup.  Boy if you could have seen the look on his face.  He was MAD!  But he took a sip and was fine.

Cute little booger.

The pacifier is up next.  He's addicted to that thing like crack, and it's a problem because I am constantly replacing it in the middle of the night, up to a dozen times.  I will give him a month to get used to the cup then I'll snatch that little pleasure away from him too.

Just keep on calling me The Dream Crusher.

  1. Growing up is hard. Better to do these things now before they are old enough to argue with you about it. Stay strong!
